¡¡ ¡¡ ACADEMICS What is a dual language program? The dual language model at SISD An American or international curriculum Internships and individual projects What is a dual language program? A dual language program is a long-term additive bilingual program. Second language research shows that students must remain in dual language programs for at least 4 years (up to 7 years) to achieve academic-level proficiency* in both languages. Unlike transitional bilingual programs, dual language programs do not seek to teach one language to the detriment of the other. Instead, dual language programs encourage maintenance and development of both languages to native-like fluency in speaking, reading and writing. * Academic proficiency - Students are able to produce cognitively and linguistically demanding academic work. I.E.: You have academic proficiency in French if you are able to write long essays and reports in Social Studies, Science and other content area subjects in French. You are also capable of presenting on subject-specific topics. * Basic Intercommunication Skills - Students can understand basic conversations relating to their daily lives and can write basic texts. I.E.: You have basic intercommunication skills in French if you have studied French for two years and can follow a simple conversation in French. The dual language model at SISD Students are expected to stay enrolled at the School for International Sustainable Development for at least 4 years to achieve academic proficiency in the other language. To give all students a chance to acquire academic proficiency in the other language, students will be tracked into different streams: French adaptation, English adaptation and the main stream. English-dominant students with basic intercommunication skills in French are encouraged to apply. Students must understand that at least 50% of their courses (including French Language Arts, Social Studies and Science) will be taught in French. French-dominant students with little or no knowledge of English will maintain and enrich their first language while learning and advancing their academic skills in English.
¡¡
An American or International Curriculum The school will adopt either the New York State graduation requirements or the International Baccalaureate requirements. By designing a curriculum around international sustainable development, we give students a chance to connect their previous experiences to a challenging issue facing the global community. The theme will build interdisciplinary studies across content areas. Students will explore sustainable development in its many facets: a social, economic, political, health and environmental challenge. Teachers will collaborate across subject areas to design thematic units that will develop language and reinforce concepts across disciplines. Internships and Individual Projects Internships in international organizations and exchanges with schools in developing nations will allow students to face real life experiences with which they can enrich their academic learning. The school will also require students to complete two individual projects a year: one in French, one in English. ¡¡ | |||||||||||||||||||||
